BaZi Ten Gods guide

Direct Officer in BaZi: The Upright Official

Zheng Guan · 正官 · an Officer star, one of the Ten Gods

The Direct Officer, Zheng Guan (正官), is the second Officer star. It is the element that controls your Day Master, with the opposite polarity. For Jia Wood, Xin Metal is the Direct Officer. Where Seven Killings is harsh pressure, the Direct Officer is fair, measured control: the rules, duties and standards you accept because they make sense.

People with a prominent Direct Officer are often responsible, principled, polite and aware of status. They respect order, keep commitments and care about their reputation. Classical texts count the Direct Officer among the auspicious stars: it stands for legitimate authority, a good name and a respected place in society.

What the name means

正 means upright and 官 means official. In imperial China the official was the scholar who kept order, and that is the spirit of this star: authority that is earned, legitimate and used fairly. Traditionally it was also the husband star in a woman’s chart, and in a man’s chart the Officer stars stood for children.

Which stem is your Direct Officer?

It depends on your Day Master. Find yours in the first column. The branches listed hold that stem as their main hidden stem, so in your chart they carry the same Ten God.

Direct Officer personality

These traits show most clearly when the Direct Officer is prominent in a chart: in the month pillar, repeated several times, or strongly rooted.

Strengths

  • Integrity: you follow through on your word.
  • Self-discipline and good judgment.
  • Respect for fairness and due process.
  • Composure under scrutiny.
  • A natural fit for leadership in structured settings.

Blind spots

  • Caring too much about appearances.
  • Rigidity: rules can become an end in themselves.
  • Fear of failure or of breaking norms.
  • Holding back ideas to avoid disapproval.

When it helps, and when it is too much

No Ten God is good or bad on its own. What decides is the strength of your Day Master and what else is in the chart.

When the Direct Officer helps

The Direct Officer is a strong asset when the Day Master can carry it, and especially when it flows into Resource (官印相生): authority supporting learning, and learning supporting you. This is the classic pattern of the professional, the civil servant and the respected expert. Wealth feeding the Officer (财官双美) adds income to reputation.

When there is too much

For a weak Day Master, a heavy Direct Officer feels like constant obligation: rules, expectations, and the sense that someone is always grading you. If the Hurting Officer clashes with it (伤官见官), that friction comes out as conflict with authority or a dented reputation. Both Officer stars together (官杀混杂) can bring mixed loyalties. Resource is the main support, because it turns the Officer’s pressure into strength for the Day Master.

Career and work style

The Direct Officer is the classic star of careers with a ladder: government and public service, law, management, medicine, compliance, large organizations and any profession with credentials and clear standards. These people rise by being trustworthy.

They can struggle where there are no rules, such as chaotic startups or fields where reputation counts for little. Their growth edge is risk: learning to back their own judgment even when no rulebook gives permission.

Work that often suits a strong Direct Officer

  • Government and public service
  • Law and compliance
  • Management in large organizations
  • Medicine and licensed professions
  • Education administration
  • Diplomacy and human resources

Love and relationships

In relationships, the Direct Officer is serious, loyal and committed to doing things properly. Partners know where they stand. The risk is formality: love that runs on duty rather than warmth. Traditionally, a clear Direct Officer in a woman’s chart was read as a good, steady husband. Modern readers look at it in any chart as a preference for commitment and mutual respect.

Money

The Direct Officer is not a Wealth star, but Wealth produces it, and it tends to bring income through position: salary, rank, benefits and professional standing. Money follows reputation. The useful habit is protecting your good name, because for a Direct Officer person it is the asset that keeps paying.

Classic combinations

Classical BaZi texts name a few patterns that involve the Direct Officer. Each describes how two stars interact, not a fixed outcome.
