BaZi Day Master guide

Ji Earth Day Master: The Garden Field

Yin Earth · 己 · one of the ten Day Masters

If your Day Master is Ji (己), you are Yin Earth, pictured as fertile soil, a garden or a field. Where Wu Earth is the mountain, Ji Earth is the land that grows food. Ji Earth people tend to be nurturing, practical, resourceful and quietly productive.

You make things grow, whether people, projects, ideas or money. You absorb a lot from others and are often the person who notices what is needed and quietly provides it. The flip side is that you can take in too much, including other people's worries.

What the classics say

己土卑湿,中正蓄藏。不愁木盛,不畏水狂。

“Ji Earth is low and moist, centered and storing. It does not worry about abundant Wood, nor fear raging Water.”

From the Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), a classical BaZi text traditionally attributed to Liu Bowen (14th century).

Fertile soil feeds plants and soaks up floods. The verse describes an Earth that is humble but resilient: it can hold strong pressure (Wood) and large flows (Water) without breaking. You can handle more demands, and more abundance, than you might think, as long as you stay centered.

Ji Earth personality

Strengths

  • Nurturing: you help people and projects grow.
  • Practical: you turn ideas into results.
  • Resourceful: you make the most of what you have.
  • Adaptable: you work well with very different personalities.
  • Discreet and trustworthy.

Blind spots

  • Absorbing other people's stress.
  • Overthinking and worrying.
  • Self-sacrifice to the point of resentment.
  • Finding it hard to say no.

Strong vs. weak Ji Earth

No Day Master is good or bad on its own. What matters is how strong it is in your chart, which depends on your birth season and the other seven characters. The same stem reads very differently in each case.

A strong Ji Earth

A strong Ji Earth (backed by Fire and Earth) is capable and self-sufficient, and can become controlling. It benefits from Metal to express its talents, Water (Wealth) to give it something productive to nurture, and Wood to keep it loose and growing.

A weaker Ji Earth

A weaker Ji Earth needs Fire, the sun on the field: warmth, encouragement and learning. Companions help too. With support, Ji Earth can carry and grow far more than its gentle appearance suggests.

The season you were born in

BaZi seasons follow the solar calendar, not the calendar month, so the dates below shift by a day or so each year. Your birth season is one of the biggest factors in how your Day Master behaves.

Spring (roughly Feb 4 to May 5)
The field is ready for planting, but Wood presses on it. Fire (sunshine) and a little Water (rain) help it produce, and you do best with warm encouragement.
Summer (roughly May 6 to Aug 7)
The soil is warm and fertile but can dry out. Water, meaning rest, emotional nourishment and steady income, is the key to a good harvest.
Autumn (roughly Aug 8 to Nov 7)
It is harvest time, and Metal drains the soil. Fire warms it and restores your energy. You may be generous to a fault, so protect your resources.
Winter (roughly Nov 8 to Feb 3)
The field is frozen. Fire (warmth, sunshine, motivation) is what you need most. With warmth, a winter Ji Earth becomes calm, wise and productive.

Career and work style

Ji Earth suits work where you develop, care for or organize things: education, healthcare, HR, administration, accounting, food, agriculture and service businesses. You are often the person who keeps the whole system running smoothly.

You may feel drained in highly competitive, aggressive environments. You do best in roles with a clear purpose, decent people and visible results. Many Ji Earth people excel as managers who develop talent, or as small business owners.

Work that often suits Ji Earth

  • Education and childcare
  • Healthcare and nursing
  • Human resources and administration
  • Accounting and bookkeeping
  • Food, hospitality and farming
  • Consulting and project management

Ji Earth in love

In love, Ji Earth is caring, attentive and devoted. You nurture your partner and family, and you often put their needs first.

Your risk is giving until you feel empty or unappreciated. Say what you need clearly, and choose a partner who notices and gives back. Someone who brings warmth, fun and encouragement can help you flourish.

Traditional BaZi reads partners through two “spouse stars”. For Ji Earth, the Wealth star is Water, especially Ren Water (壬), traditionally read as a wife or girlfriend. The Officer star is Wood, especially Jia Wood (甲), traditionally read as a husband or boyfriend. Many modern readers look at both stars for everyone. Ji Earth also combines with Jia Wood (己甲合), one of the five classic stem pairings.

Money

Ji Earth tends to be careful and practical with money, good at saving and at managing household or business resources. Water is your Wealth element, and good soil holds water well, so you can accumulate steadily. Watch for lending or giving more than you can afford.

What helps Ji Earth thrive

  • Get sunlight and warmth. Fire is your fuel.
  • Decide each week what you will not take on.
  • Keep a personal project that is just for you.
  • Write worries down instead of carrying them around.
