BaZi Ten Gods guide
Indirect Wealth in BaZi: The Dealmaker
Pian Cai · 偏财 · a Wealth star, one of the Ten Gods
Indirect Wealth, Pian Cai (偏财), is a Wealth star. Wealth is the element your Day Master controls, and Indirect Wealth is the one with the same polarity. For Jia Wood, Wu Earth is Indirect Wealth, because Wood controls Earth. Wealth stars stand for money, resources, results and whatever you manage.
Indirect Wealth is the wealth of opportunity: business, deals, side income and money that comes from many sources rather than one paycheck. People with a strong Indirect Wealth are often sociable, generous, quick to spot a chance and comfortable with uncertainty. They tend to treat money as something to move and use, not to hoard.

What the name means
偏 means slanting or indirect, and 财 means wealth. Compared with Direct Wealth, the steady paycheck, Indirect Wealth is money from less direct routes: bonuses, commissions, trade, side businesses and windfalls. Traditionally it also stands for the father in every chart, and older texts sometimes read it as a man’s romantic interests. Modern readers usually focus on its money and social meanings.
Which stem is your Indirect Wealth?
It depends on your Day Master. Find yours in the first column. The branches listed hold that stem as their main hidden stem, so in your chart they carry the same Ten God.

When it helps, and when it is too much
No Ten God is good or bad on its own. What decides is the strength of your Day Master and what else is in the chart.
When the Indirect Wealth helps
Indirect Wealth helps when the Day Master is strong enough to hold it. Then it shows up as business sense, good deals and money from more than one source. It is even better when an Output star feeds it, which is talent turning into money, or when it flows on to the Officer star, which is Wealth producing status and position.
When there is too much
When the Day Master is weak and Wealth is heavy, the classical phrase is “a poor man in a rich house” (富屋贫人): money is all around you, but you lack the strength to hold on to it. In practice this can look like overextension, debt, or working hard for other people’s profits. Companion stars (Friend and Rob Wealth) are the classic help, because they share the load. Wealth also controls Resource, so too much of it can crowd out study, rest and patience.
Career and work style
Indirect Wealth suits work where income tracks results: sales, trade, business ownership, real estate, marketing, agency work and anything with commissions. These people are often good networkers and natural at matching buyers with sellers.
A fixed salary with no upside can feel limiting. Many people with a strong Indirect Wealth do best with a stable base plus a side venture, or with a role where they share in the gains. Pairing their instinct for opportunity with a careful partner protects them from their own enthusiasm.
Work that often suits a strong Indirect Wealth
- Sales and trade
- Running a business
- Real estate
- Marketing and promotion
- Agency and brokerage work
- Hospitality and events
Love and relationships
Indirect Wealth is warm, fun and generous in relationships, with a busy social life. It enjoys romance and attention. The challenge is consistency: the same restlessness that chases new opportunities can chase new people. Traditional readings of a man’s chart treat Direct Wealth as the wife and Indirect Wealth as other romantic interests. Many modern readers simply see a social, flirtatious streak that does best with a clear commitment.
Money
This is the star of variable and unexpected money: deals, bonuses, side income and lucky breaks. It can bring real wealth, and real swings. The habits that help most are a savings floor that never gets touched, a limit on how much goes into any single opportunity, and keeping business money separate from personal money.
Classic combinations
Classical BaZi texts name a few patterns that involve the Indirect Wealth. Each describes how two stars interact, not a fixed outcome.
