BaZi Ten Gods guide
Indirect Resource in BaZi: The Unconventional Thinker
Pian Yin · 偏印 · a Resource star, one of the Ten Gods
Indirect Resource, Pian Yin (偏印), is a Resource star. Resource is the element that produces your Day Master, and Indirect Resource is the one with the same polarity. For Jia Wood, Ren Water is Indirect Resource, because Water nourishes Wood. Resource stars stand for support, learning, protection and rest.
Indirect Resource is the unconventional side of support: intuition, self-teaching, specialist or unusual knowledge, spirituality, and insight that comes from outside the mainstream. People with a prominent Indirect Resource are often perceptive, private and original thinkers, drawn to subjects like psychology, research, technology and metaphysics.

What the name means
偏 means indirect and 印 means seal, the official seal that gave a document its authority. Resource stars are “seals” because they back you up. Indirect Resource is support that is real but unusual: a mentor from outside your field, or knowledge you taught yourself. It also has an old nickname, the Owl (枭神), from its habit of controlling the Eating God, a pattern explained below.
Which stem is your Indirect Resource?
It depends on your Day Master. Find yours in the first column. The branches listed hold that stem as their main hidden stem, so in your chart they carry the same Ten God.
| Day Master | Its Indirect Resource | Branches |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia Wood | 壬 Ren Water | 亥 Hai (Pig) |
| 乙 Yi Wood | 癸 Gui Water | 子 Zi (Rat) |
| 丙 Bing Fire | 甲 Jia Wood | 寅 Yin (Tiger) |
| 丁 Ding Fire | 乙 Yi Wood | 卯 Mao (Rabbit) |
| 戊 Wu Earth | 丙 Bing Fire | 巳 Si (Snake) |

Indirect Resource personality
These traits show most clearly when the Indirect Resource is prominent in a chart: in the month pillar, repeated several times, or strongly rooted.
Strengths
- Intuition: you notice what is not said.
- Depth: you study subjects thoroughly.
- Original thinking that does not follow the crowd.
- Independence in learning.
- Calm in solitude.
Blind spots
- Withdrawing or overthinking.
- Suspicion of other people’s motives.
- Starting many interests and finishing few.
- Difficulty enjoying simple pleasures.
When it helps, and when it is too much
No Ten God is good or bad on its own. What decides is the strength of your Day Master and what else is in the chart.
When the Indirect Resource helps
Indirect Resource helps a weak Day Master by giving it support, especially against a strong Seven Killings, which it transforms into learning and strength (杀印相生). In these charts it shows up as expertise, insight, resilience and the ability to stand alone when others need a crowd.
When there is too much
When the Day Master is already strong, or when the Eating God is the star the chart needs, a heavy Indirect Resource gets in the way. This is the classic “Owl steals the food” (枭神夺食): Indirect Resource controls the Eating God (Ren Water against Bing Fire for Jia Wood), so enjoyment, appetite for life and creative output can stall. Indirect Wealth is the classic remedy, because Wealth controls Resource.
Career and work style
Indirect Resource suits specialist and unconventional fields: research, psychology and counseling, technology, specialist engineering, investigation, metaphysics and astrology, writing and any niche expertise. These people often do their best work alone or in small expert groups.
Routine, crowded workplaces can drain them. They need time to think and freedom to follow an interest deep. Their growth edge is finishing and sharing: turning private insight into something others can use, and charging for it.
Work that often suits a strong Indirect Resource
- Research and analysis
- Psychology and counseling
- Technology and specialist engineering
- Investigation
- Metaphysics and astrology
- Writing and niche expertise
Love and relationships
In love, Indirect Resource is perceptive and loyal, but private. Partners may feel you hold something back. You do best with a partner who respects your need for solitude and is curious about your interests. Traditionally, Indirect Resource could stand for a stepmother or a mother figure outside the usual pattern. In modern readings it often describes the kind of emotional support you look for: understanding, not fuss.
Money
Indirect Resource is not a money star, and its people often care more about knowledge than income. Money tends to come from expertise: consulting, licensing ideas or teaching a niche skill. The main risk is undervaluing what you know. Price your expertise, and keep one practical income stream while you explore.
Classic combinations
Classical BaZi texts name a few patterns that involve the Indirect Resource. Each describes how two stars interact, not a fixed outcome.
