BaZi Ten Gods guide

Friend in BaZi: The Peer

Bi Jian · 比肩 · a Companion star, one of the Ten Gods

The Friend star, Bi Jian (比肩), is the first of the Ten Gods. It is any stem in your chart with the same element and the same polarity as your Day Master. If you are Jia Wood (Yang Wood), another Jia in your chart is your Friend. The Chinese name means “shoulder to shoulder”: someone standing level with you, neither above nor below.

Bi Jian stands for the self and for your equals: siblings, classmates, colleagues, teammates and close friends. In personality it shows up as independence, self-reliance and a firm sense of who you are. People with a prominent Friend star usually prefer to do things their own way and to stand on their own feet.

What the name means

比 means to stand side by side and 肩 means shoulder. The image is two people of the same height walking together, and that is the heart of this star: equality. A Friend is not a boss, a parent or a follower. It is a peer, with everything that brings: loyalty and backup, and also comparison and competition.

Which stem is your Friend?

It depends on your Day Master. Find yours in the first column. The branches listed hold that stem as their main hidden stem, so in your chart they carry the same Ten God.

Friend personality

These traits show most clearly when the Friend is prominent in a chart: in the month pillar, repeated several times, or strongly rooted.

Strengths

  • Self-reliance: you trust yourself and do not wait to be rescued.
  • Steady self-worth: other people’s opinions do not easily shake you.
  • Loyalty to your circle: you stand by friends and teammates.
  • Fairness: you treat people as equals and expect the same.
  • Stamina: a strong sense of self keeps you going when work gets hard.

Blind spots

  • Stubbornness: advice can sound like interference.
  • Going it alone, even when help would make things easier.
  • Competing with peers when cooperating would serve you better.
  • Money and time that drain toward friends and shared plans.

When it helps, and when it is too much

No Ten God is good or bad on its own. What decides is the strength of your Day Master and what else is in the chart.

When the Friend helps

The Friend star helps most when your Day Master is weak. Then it works like a teammate: more confidence, support from peers, and the stamina to carry your responsibilities. A weak Day Master facing heavy Wealth or Officer pressure often does much better with a Friend or two in the chart, or in a luck cycle.

When there is too much

When your Day Master is already strong, more Friend stars can tip into excess. The classic picture is many siblings sharing one inheritance (群比争财): too many people competing for the same resources. In daily life that can look like stubbornness, rivalry with peers, or money that slips away through shared ventures and loans to friends. A strong chart with many Friends usually wants an outlet, such as Output to express that energy or Officer to give it discipline.

Career and work style

People with a strong Friend star like autonomy. They do well as independent professionals, freelancers, founders and specialists who are judged on their own results. They also thrive in teams of equals: partnerships, sports teams, crews and peer groups where everyone pulls their weight.

Rigid hierarchies can chafe. Being micromanaged feels like an insult to Bi Jian, and office politics feel like a waste of time. The best fit is usually a clear area of responsibility, measurable goals and the freedom to decide how to reach them.

Work that often suits a strong Friend

  • Freelance and independent work
  • Partnerships and co-founding
  • Sports and coaching
  • Sales with personal targets
  • Skilled trades
  • Peer support and community work

Love and relationships

In relationships, the Friend star brings equality. You want a partner, not a boss or a dependant, and you value a relationship where both people keep their own lives. The risk is that independence turns into distance, or that friends and siblings compete with your partner for your time. Traditional texts read the Wealth star as the wife in a man’s chart, and Companion stars compete with Wealth, so a chart crowded with Friends was read as a partner competing with your friends for attention. Many modern readers apply that lesson to anyone: protect time for the person you love.

Money

Bi Jian is a sharing star. Money tends to come through your own effort, and it can leave through friends, siblings and shared projects. Lending to people you trust, splitting costs and joint ventures are where Friend-heavy charts most often lose money. Clear agreements, even with close friends, protect both the money and the friendship.

Classic combinations

Classical BaZi texts name a few patterns that involve the Friend. Each describes how two stars interact, not a fixed outcome.
