BaZi Ten Gods guide
Eating God in BaZi: The Creator
Shi Shen · 食神 · an Output star, one of the Ten Gods
The Eating God, Shi Shen (食神), is an Output star. It is any stem of the element your Day Master produces, with the same polarity. For Jia Wood, Bing Fire is the Eating God, because Wood feeds Fire. Output stars stand for what flows out of you: talent, ideas, words, food, care and, traditionally in a woman’s chart, children.
Of the two Output stars, the Eating God is the relaxed one. It expresses itself naturally, without forcing or showing off. People with a strong Eating God are often good-humored, creative, sociable and fond of life’s pleasures, from food to music. Classical texts count it among the auspicious stars because it is generous, calm and productive.

What the name means
食 means food and 神 means god or spirit. The Eating God is the star of sustenance: in the cycle of elements it produces Wealth, and it enjoys what it produces. Classical texts also call it the longevity star (寿星), a sign of how kindly they viewed it. One more detail: in Mandarin, 食神 (the Eating God) and 十神 (the Ten Gods) are both pronounced Shi Shen.
Which stem is your Eating God?
It depends on your Day Master. Find yours in the first column. The branches listed hold that stem as their main hidden stem, so in your chart they carry the same Ten God.

When it helps, and when it is too much
No Ten God is good or bad on its own. What decides is the strength of your Day Master and what else is in the chart.
When the Eating God helps
The Eating God is welcome when the Day Master is strong. It gives that strength a gentle outlet and turns it into skill and, through the Wealth it produces, into income. Its most famous job is controlling Seven Killings: for Jia Wood, Bing Fire melts Geng Metal. A chart where the Eating God tames Seven Killings (食神制杀) is classically read as someone who turns pressure into accomplishment.
When there is too much
When the Day Master is weak, a heavy Eating God drains it: too much giving, too much output, not enough rest. It can also be blocked by Indirect Resource, which controls it (the “Owl steals the food” pattern below). When the Eating God is the star the chart needs, that block shows up as stalled creativity and plans left half done. Resource and Companion stars restore balance for a weak Day Master.
Career and work style
The Eating God suits work where skill and taste matter and where you can keep a humane pace: food and hospitality, the arts, design, writing, teaching, wellness, childcare and any craft. Many Eating God people do their best work when they enjoy the process, not just the result.
High-pressure, combative workplaces wear them down. They also need a nudge toward commercial thinking: a beautiful product still needs a price, a plan and a deadline. Pairing their gift with a Wealth star, or a practical business partner, often turns a hobby into a living.
Work that often suits a strong Eating God
- Food, cooking and hospitality
- Writing and the arts
- Design and crafts
- Teaching and tutoring
- Wellness and care work
- Entertainment
Love and relationships
The Eating God is affectionate, easygoing and generous in love. You show care through comfort: good food, attention, a relaxed home. Partners usually find you easy to be around. The risks are avoiding hard conversations and letting routine replace effort. Traditionally, in a woman’s chart, the Eating God also represents children, and it is read as a gentle, nurturing style of parenting.
Money
The Eating God produces Wealth in the cycle of elements, so money tends to follow skill and reputation. Income often grows steadily from something you are good at and enjoy doing. The main risks are spending on pleasure and a relaxed attitude to pricing and paperwork. Charge properly for what you make.
Classic combinations
Classical BaZi texts name a few patterns that involve the Eating God. Each describes how two stars interact, not a fixed outcome.
